FLEXIBILITY. DIFFERENTIATION. ENGAGING INSTRUCTION.
Virtual education is defined by the Virginia Department of Education as programs that “provide instruction for students in non-traditional settings through distance learning options. Virtual learning programs offer flexibility to students while providing instruction aligned with the Standards of Learning” ("Virginia Department of Education"). Charlottesville City Schools harnesses virtual education as a tool for expanding opportunities to students and is proud to offer a high-quality, rigorous, and engaging virtual education program.
Virtual (online) courses take instruction beyond the brick and mortar walls of traditional classrooms. Students receive instruction, participate in class, turn in assignments, and communicate with their teachers and classmates in a virtual environment (by way of the Internet). Lessons are accessed through a software program called a “learning management system” or LMS that organizes content delivery and instruction. In addition to the LMS, a variety of online tools are used to enhance students’ virtual learning experience: discussion boards, online collaborative applications, video conferencing, student email, and other websites or tools chosen by the teacher.
All online courses offered through the Charlottesville City Schools Virtual Education program are teacher led and designed. Courses are rigorous and robust enough to meet the needs of advanced learners. For the 2012-2013 school year, select courses will be offered to Charlottesville High School students. Students may choose to take an online course as part of their regular course load or in addition to a traditional seven-period day. Courses are available anytime, so students are able to complete coursework before, during, or after the regular school day.
